Recently Paid New York Sales Tax Audit Assessments

Last Updated on September 5, 2024

New York taxpayers who have paid hefty sales tax audits have options to drive material value – even long after the audit has been paid. The paid date of the assessment is key in sizing up your options:

REFUNDS:           Always 2 years from the paid date of the assessment to file refunds, but only up to the amount of the assessment.

WAIVER:             Unlimited refunds for the audit period can be filed “if” the last waiver was within 6 months.

REDUCTION:      Always 2 years from the paid date of the assessment to file for refunded tax as a result of the assessment.

TaxMatrix services a number of New York-based companies on audit defense and tax recovery, often using these provisions for audit reduction and credits (refunds). If you are currently under audit or would like to discuss your optionality after a paid assessment, please contact us at [email protected].
